Plants do not breathe, they only respire through their leaves. Plants experience dark respiration because they need energy to function even when no light conditions exist. Plants need to absorb oxygen for respiration.

Often, the respiration is masked by the fact that photosynthesis produces oxygen faster than respiration takes it up and photosynthesis uses carbon. Their tissues respire just as animal tissues do. At night photosynthesis stops but respiration occurs.
